Submission Guidelines

At Starfish Bay Publishing, our focus is dedicated solely to children’s books. We believe books for younger readers should be both meaningful and magical—offering reliable information, inspiring a sense of wonder, and encouraging a bright, hopeful outlook on the world. We’re always on the lookout for bold ideas and original voices and work closely with our passionate authors and illustrators to craft memorable stories that resonate with children.

Starfish Bay is comprised of two imprints: Starfish Bay Children’s Books and Tiny Seed Publishing. Traditional publishing is Starfish Bay’s main focus. All books that were published by Starfish Bay Children’s Books and Tiny Seed Publishing before December 2023 followed the traditional publishing model.

Due to the severe impact of Covid-19 our business between 2020-2022, we introduced two additional publishing programmes alongside our Traditional Publishing Programme: the Author Supported Traditional Publishing Programme and the Secondary Publishing Programme.

We are pleased to announce that our Starfish Bay Children’s Books imprint has fully recovered. As of January 2025, it has resumed exclusive focus on our Traditional Publishing Programme and now only considers submissions for children’s picture books from solicited authors.

Our two additional publishing programmes continue under our Tiny Seed imprint, which is managed by the same dedicated publishing team, and follows the same high standards and processes as our Traditional Publishing Programme. Tiny Seed only accepts submissions for children’s picture books and currently runs both the Author Supported Traditional Publishing Programme and the Secondary Publishing Programme. These programmes remain open to both unsolicited and solicited authors.

In addition, Starfish Bay has recently launched a new publishing programme: the Author Advance Programme. This programme is open to both unsolicited and solicited authors and is currently accepting submissions of longer-form children’s books and young adult fiction.

We deeply appreciate all authors who have participated in the Author Supported Traditional Publishing Programme and Secondary Publishing Programme—and to those whose work will be included in these programmes and through our Author Advance Programme. To show our gratitude, all authors accepted into these programmes will now be considered solicited authors for future submissions.

Making Your Submission

We’re looking for unique and imaginative stories that captivate young readers. Strong, well-developed characters, vibrant language, and a genuine, relatable voice are key elements we seek in submissions.

  • For picture book submissions, please include your full manuscript.
  • For chapter books, please include either a complete manuscript or sample chapter(s) with a story outline. If you are pitching a series, please consider including subsequent story ideas in your submission.
  • For middle grade and young adult fiction, please submit your first chapter, a full one-page synopsis and a cover letter with details about the book and yourself.
  • For non-fiction books for children and young adults, we are looking for captivating real-life stories that connect with young readers, particularly those in primary school. Stories that are both relatable and inspiring are especially welcomed.

As a traditional publisher, we uphold high editorial standards and prioritise the quality and integrity of each book we produce. All submissions are thoroughly reviewed by our editorial team, and publishing offers are made only to manuscripts that meet our selection criteria.
